Alive Labs establishes low-carbon, bioreceptive concrete mix, Terranite

September 2023

After a considerable period of Research & Development via an Innovate UK SMART grant, Alive Labs has successfully developed its low-carbon, bioreceptive concrete mix, Terranite. Terranite provides the key environmental factors for selected mosses to grow on its surface, while at the same time aiming to meet stringent British Standards across strength, fire resistance and embodied carbon.

Throughout the R&D process Alive Labs innovated through a wide range of problems, such as how to achieve pH neutralisation throughout the concrete matrix, and how to develop an open pore structure for water transport whilst maintaining high strength values. The result is a novel cementitious compound that is utterly unique in its composition and performance.
